What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Most people search for stump removal without realizing there are two very different ways to do it, and the difference matters for the yard and the wallet. Stump grinding uses a machine to chew the stump down into chips several inches below the surface, leaving the roots in the ground to decay over time. Full stump removal, by contrast, means digging or pulling the entire stump and its root ball out of the ground, roots and all.
Grinding wins for almost every homeowner. It is faster, costs less, and leaves a small filled hole instead of the large crater that pulling the whole root ball tears open across your lawn and beds. The roots left behind simply rot away underground over the following years and do nothing in the meantime. Full extraction is only worth the mess and cost in specific cases, like clearing ground for a foundation, a pool, or hardscaping where the roots cannot stay.
The one thing grinding does not do is kill a stump that wants to resprout on its own, since some species push up shoots from the remaining roots. For those, grinding is paired with a treatment so the roots do not keep sending up growth. How does Arborwright grind a stump?
Step 01 · Check the site
Before grinding, we check the stump's size, the access for the machine, and what is underground, because hitting a utility line, irrigation, or a sprinkler head is the main risk. Utilities are located and marked first.
Step 02 · Grind below grade
The grinder reduces the stump and the surface roots to chips, several inches below ground level, not just flush with the surface. Grinding deep enough is what lets the spot be filled, leveled, and replanted afterward.
Step 03 · Treat resprouts if needed
For species that try to resprout from the remaining roots, the grinding is paired with a targeted treatment so the stump does not keep pushing up new shoots. Not every stump needs this, and we will tell you whether yours does.
Step 04 · Clean up and fill

Before founding Arborwright Tree Care, I spent several years as part of a research team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where careful observation and methodical thinking defined the job. I hold two degrees in the biological sciences, and I apply that same research-first mindset to every tree I evaluate.
What drives my work is a deep passion for healthy ecological landscapes. I believe most struggling trees can be saved when the right diagnosis comes first. Removal is a last resort, not a default. I came up in tree work in Tennessee, where I spent years climbing, pruning, and learning how trees actually behave under load and stress. There is no shortcut for that kind of time in the canopy. When I moved to the CSRA, I brought that hands-on foundation with me and adapted it to a new set of species, the region’s soils, and a much longer growing season.
